It’s a great time of year (Day of the Dead) to visit the National Museum of Mexican Art, a (free) gem nestled in the heart of Pilsen. This once-predominately Czech neighborhood is now a vibrant hub of Mexican heritage, as seen in its colorful murals and authentic restaurants & cafes.
The museum is showcasing its annual celebration of the dearly departed, Día de Muertos, Where the Past Is Present, a significant event in Mexican culture. According to the Catholic calendar, All Saints’ Day is observed on November 1, honoring deceased children. Following this, All Souls’ Day on November 2 celebrates deceased adults. Families joyfully await the return of their souls, creating offerings and setting up home altars (ofrendos). This annual exhibit will run from September 20 to December 8, 2024. Pilsen is definitely on my list as I compile options for a food tour. I’m excited to share more about it, so stay tuned.
